Afghan war through the eyes of the Taliban mujahideen

* A must see video at the end

The Afghan war from behind enemy lines: Documentary-maker follows Taliban as they attack U.S. soldiers

A documentary made by a Norwegian journalist embedded with Taliban fighters has provided a rare glimpse of the other side of the Afghanistan conflict.

The raw footage - captured by Paul Refsdal - shows the Afghan militants attacking U.S. convoys on a road below their mountainous hide-out and celebrating hits with a high-five.

The men also show their softer side to the Norwegian journalist by singing, reciting verses from the Koran and even brushing their long hair as he quietly records their day-to-day activities.

Concern: Taliban fighters refuse to show their faces to documentary-maker Paul Refsdal as he films Behind Enemy Lines while embedded with a group fighting U.S. soldiers in east Afghanistan

But the venture is far from risk-free as Refsdal reveals during his narration of the 20-minute film entitled Behind Enemy Lines.

At one stage, the small band of mujahaideen come under fire from a fearsome U.S. AC130 gunship - a converted transport plane equipped with powerful machine gun and rockets.

And at the end of the documentary, the journalist explains how in a bid to capture further footage he is kidnapped by a separate group, but is released unharmed six days later.

Discussion: The men spend much of their time talking and even joking, much like soldiers they are fighting against, the documentary shows

The film begins with Refsdal saying how he spent seven weeks waiting in Kabul for permission to join Dawran, a commander in the east of the country.

There are tense scenes as he first comes into contact with the group, when fighters cover their faces from the cameraman.

He describes it as the 'point of no return' and says: 'At that point I had to greet them and trust they were not fanatics.

'The Taliban are fighting tall white men and I am a tall white man with a camera.

'If the Taliban suspect me of being a spy they will execute me.'

Heavily-armed men are then seen scowling at the camera in tense scenes, but by day two they have settled into their normal routines.

The commander of the group, bearded and long-haired Dawran, is then introduced and shown living in a hand-built clay house with his wife and three young children.

He is seen leading his men in ideological discussions, a prayer session and a talk on tactics before gun fire is heard in the valley below.

A lighter moment is provided by a fighter declaring 'I put it in the wrong way' as they load their weapons in preparation for an attack on U.S. vehicles.

The attack itself involves a radio discussion with another unit closer to the Tarmac road which American army men are forced to use everyday.

Over the radio, a commander says: 'Allah make our enemies perish. I seek refuge in you. Alllah make the mujahaideen victorious.'

Then the man's voice can be heard saying: 'Use the rocket launcher Rafiq, fire the launcher.'

Meanwhile, Dawran's men are using a heavy-calibre machine gun to fire on the Humvee armoured vehicles, apparently destroying one.

They celebrate with a high-five and moments later singing can be heard over the radio.

Celebration: Taliban fighters perform a high five after the man in the centre who is operating a heavy machine gun claims he has hit an American vehicle

Family man: Dawran sits with his daughter who lives with him in the mountains. It is believed she was later killed by U.S. jets during a raid

Dawran claims 80 fighters were involved in the attack, before showing his young son and daughter to the camera as he gently plays with them.

Next, a bizarre sequence in which one Taliban fighter, clad in eye make-up, brushes his long hair whihc has been died with henna as a comrade sings.

Refsdal informs viewers that a price of $400,000 has been placed on Dawran's head, and the commander himself tells the story of how he was almost killed by a traitor.

Later their perilous position is exposed when the men become concerned by the sight of the U.S. gunship flying nearby.

The narrator says: 'One aircraft that scared them is a transport plane transformed into a gunship.

'When this was in the air Dawran was very concerned.'

During the night, the fighters flee into the mountains when it becomes apparent their hide-out is to be attacked.

Devout: The deeply-religious fighters pray before an attack and speak throughout the piece of their Islamic faith

And the next day U.S. special forces achieve a successful raid on the house of Dawran's deputy, killing him and a dozen fighters and relatives.

This action ends Refsdal's filming of the unit, and he is told to go back to Kabul.

But at the end of the film, the documentary-maker reveals he was tempted back to the hills by another fighter called Omar, and kidnapped, but released six days later.- www.dailymail.co.uk

Gaza raid: Gaza-bound aid ship 'Rachel Corrie' reach Israel blockade

World outrage: Demonstrators display an anti-Israel banner as they march to the U.S. embassy in Kuala Lumpur today, to protest against Israel's storming of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla on Monday

If Israel attacks, we won't resist, says Nobel peace laureate on board Gaza-bound aid ship 'Rachel Corrie'

The Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate on an aid ship heading to Gaza says the activists on board will not resist Israeli soldiers if they board the vessel.

Mairead McGuire said this afternoon the 1,200-ton Rachel Corrie is 134 miles off the Gaza coast and is expected to reach Israel's 20-mile exclusion zone Saturday morning.

She said the mission aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is under a three-year-old Israeli blockade. Israel has vowed the ship will not reach land.

We won't resist: Nobel peace prize winner Mairead Maguire standing beside the MV Rachel Corrie in May. Today she said the activists on board the ship heading for Gaza will not resist if attacked by the Israeli army

McGuire said the activists are prepared to be arrested and taken to Israel if Israeli soldiers board the boat.

The Irish-flagged ship's attempt to break the Gaza blockade comes four days after an Israeli commando raid on a larger aid flotilla left nine activists dead.

The attack sparked outrage around the world.

It is not clear what the Israeli army is planning to stop the Rachel Corrie from reaching Gaza.

Earlier this week a Navy commander told the Jerusalem Post that more force would be used if necessary.

‘We boarded the ship and were attacked as if it was a war,' the commander was quoted as saying.

‘That will mean that we will have to come prepared in the future as if it was a war.’

Today Greta Berlin, a spokesman for the Free Gaza group, says the 1,200-ton Rachel Corrie is heading directly to Gaza and will not stop in any port on the way.

It is trying to deliver hundreds of tons of aid, including wheelchairs, medical supplies and concrete.

The former head of the U.N. Oil-for-Food program in Iraq, Denis Halliday, is also among the 11 passengers on board, she said.

The Irish vessel is named after an American college student crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer while protesting house demolitions in Gaza.

Israel will not allow the aid ship to reach Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told senior Cabinet ministers late last night.

According to a participant in the meeting, he said Israel made several offers to direct the ship to an Israeli port, where the aid supplies would be unloaded, inspected and transferred to Gaza by land, but the offers were rejected.

Netanyahu has hotly rejected calls to lift the blockade on Gaza, insisting that it prevents missile attacks on Israel.

The Rachel Corrie's cargo of concrete is also a problem, because Israel considers that to have military uses.

Netanyahu also instructed the military to act with sensitivity in preventing the Rachel Corrie from landing and avoid harming those on board the ship, the participant said.

Israel has rejected demands for an international panel to probe Monday's deadly commando raid on the aid ships, saying it can conduct a professional, impartial investigation on its own.

Activists say Israel sabotaged the previous aid flotilla, and Israeli defence officials said today only that unspecified 'actions' were taken when the boats were still far from Gaza.

Without explicitly confirming sabotage, the officials say the Israeli actions only delayed the flotilla. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was classified.

In Istanbul, Turkey's deputy prime minister said today that economic and defence cooperation with Israel will be reduced amid tensions after the killing of nine Turkish activists by Israeli commandos on an aid ship.

.
Heading in to trouble, and heading out of it: Left, the Rachel Corrie, due to arrive at the Israeli blockade today. Right, one of the activists injured in the original raid is taken to hospital in Ankara, Turkey

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said all deals with Israel are being evaluated.

'We are serious on this issue. New cooperation will not start and relations with Israel will be reduced,' he said.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz has said discussions about extending a Russian natural gas pipeline to Israel and providing fresh drinking water to Israel from the Manavgat river were being shelved.

The pro-Palestinian activists' deaths on the aid ship increased tensions in the Mideast, especially with Turkey, an important ally of Israel.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Israel's actions 'a historic mistake'.

Israel maintains its commandos opened fire Monday as a last resort after they were attacked, and released a video showing soldiers in riot gear descending from a helicopter into a crowd of men with clubs. Three or four activists overpowered each soldier as he landed.

Returning activists admitted fighting with the Israelis but insisted their actions were in self defence because the ships were being boarded in international waters by a military force.

Thousands jammed Istanbul yesterday to pay tribute to those killed on the ship at a funeral service outside the Fatih mosque, and larger services were expected today.

The youngest of the nine activists killed, Furkan Dogan, was to be buried today in his family's hometown in Kayseri in central Turkey.

Dogan, who was born in Troy, New York, moved to Turkey when he was two. The other eight activists were all Turkish nationals. - www.dailymail.co.uk/news

Tentera Israel serang konvoi bantuan, apa pendirian Kerajaan Malaysia?

Aku tak jumpa pun (mungkin aku terlepas pandang).

- BERNAMA

Palestin tambah derita - Mesir bina tembok sempadan

Askar Mesir maut di Gaza

CAIRO - NOVEMBER 22: In this handout photo provided by the Israeli Government Press Office (GPO), Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (R) meets with his Israeli counterpart Shimon Peres during a meeting November 22, 2009 in Cairo, Egypt. Mubarak and Peres on Sunday acknowledged differences over the contentious issue of Jerusalem.

- Reuters

Aku cuma nak kata:
Kadang kadang tingkah laku nya amat menyakitkan hati umat Islam keseluruhan nya.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (R) speaks with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Presidential Palace in Cairo December 29, 2009.

Gejolak jiwa seorang mejar Muslim

Mejar Hasan kelahiran Amerika Syarikat.

Beliau mahu Kongres menetapkan apakah penembakan tadi bersifat serangan pengganas.

Imam Abdul-Malik menegaskan bahawa menjadi jemaah masjid bukan bermakna menjadi seorang pelampau.

The soldier son of one of Britain's most senior commanders has lost his leg in a Taliban bomb blast.

Captain Harry Parker, 26, suffered horrific injuries as he caught the full force of a booby-trap bomb while leading a patrol from the 4th Battalion The Rifles.

His father Lieutenant General Sir Nick Parker, who will take over as deputy Nato commander in Afghanistan later this year, has flown home from holiday to be at his son's bedside at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.

Captain Harry Parker
Leading patrol: Captain Harry Parker was severely injured after losing in a leg in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan

UK casualties have reached record levels amid fierce fighting in Helmand province.

In one recent week 157 soldiers were admitted to field hospitals - thought to be the highest figure since operations began in 2006.

Captain Parker, who was commissioned less than three years ago, is understood to be in a critical condition after being flown home for emergency treatment after the explosion on Saturday.

There are fears that he will lose his other leg as a result of multiple injuries.

It is thought he stepped on a concealed pressure pad that detonated the bomb hidden under the road surface.

No other soldiers were hurt in the attack near the hotbed town of Nad Ali in central Helmand.

Roadside bombs have killed and maimed scores of British troops in recent months, as Taliban fighters have become increasingly skilled at building and planting them to cause maximum carnage.

In the first five months of this year UK forces recorded 418 attacks - up from 293 in the same period last year.

Lieutenant General Nick Parker
Bedside vigil: Britain's third most senior army officer Lieutenant General Sir Nick Parker is devastated after learning his son Harry was severely injured

General Parker, who was knighted last month, is among the Army's most senior and highly-respected officers.

In his current post of Commander Regional Forces he is in charge of all UK-based units and head of the Territorial Army.

In September he is due to deploy to Afghanistan as Britain's senior commander in the country and deputy commander of Nato coalition forces.

A senior Army source said: 'General Sir Nick, his wife and the whole family are understandably devastated by what has happened to Harry. The general understands the risk more than most but it is still an appalling thing for any parent to go through.'

Medics at the field hospital at Camp Bastion in Helmand revealed yesterday that 157 people were admitted for treatment last week - by far the highest figure to date.

The figure is higher than the total of 116 for the whole of the previous month, reflect the sustained intensity of fighting during the offensive codenamed Operation Panther's Claw.

In the past week, it is understood, the hospital has at times treated more casualties than it was designed to cope with.

Last weekend included its busiest-ever 24-hour period, with the worst casualty toll since the Falklands 27 years ago.

More than 30 wounded soldiers, including 15 seriously hurt, were flown into Camp Bastion from the battlefield and the operating theatre went through more than 100 pints of blood products.

The 33-bed hospital came close to overflowing, but staff were able to move stabilised casualties on to emergency flights to Britain or to Kabul, and not one wounded soldier was turned away.

Latest figures show that more than 50 British soldiers have lost limbs and seven have been blinded in at least one eye while serving in Afghanistan - the vast majority of them victims of Taliban roadside and booby trap bombings.

The number of compensation claims lodged against the Ministry of Defence by British servicemen and women has leapt by 60 per cent since operations in Afghanistan began, from 550 in 2006-7 to 922 in 2008-9.
Over the same period the number of claims being dealt with and settled dropped from 889 to 657, and the amount of money paid out in compensation fell by nine per cent, from £33million to £29.8million. - http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Israel's 'other voices' go unheard

By Rachel Shabi in Israel

Israeli activists demonstrate against the war in Tel Aviv [AFP]

"It is very difficult to add a different voice, because the public and media discourse is so monochrome and so militaristic," said Nomika Zion, an Israeli member of the peace collective, Another Voice.
This group, which comprises residents of both Gaza and neighbouring Israeli towns like Sderot, is seeking to present an alternative to the majority of Israeli pro-war opinions that currently dominate the media.
It is a tough task.

Zion, herself from Sderot, recalled one occasion when a colleague was verbally attacked in the middle of a TV interview by a group of passers-by who tried to pull the mike away from him.
"I really feel that our democracy is in trouble sometimes," she says.
"If you can't raise your voice and say things aloud without being scared that someone will attack you, it is very dangerous for our society."

Deconstructing government justifications

Media reports on the Israeli view of the country's war in Gaza converge on the overwhelming public approval for it - polls show over 80 per cent are in favour of the attacks. Israelis who are not supportive of the war face the sort of public derision that Zion describes.

They also face the challenge of deconstructing the government's justification for its deadly assaults on Gaza - a series of key messages that are strongly endorsed in both public and media spheres.
Such messages include assertions that Hamas is a terrorist organisation backed by Iran; Hamas broke the six-month ceasefire that ended a few weeks ago; and that Israel is waging a war of self-defence against Hamas and not against ordinary Gazans.

"Many people in Israel call us traitors and war criminals because we talk about the war while it is still going on," said Teddy Katz of the Israeli peace group, Gush Shalom."But the truth is that this government ordered a criminal war."
http://english.aljazeera.net/mritems/Images/2009/1/10/200911011040479734_2.jpg
Alternative voices
Gush Shalom is one member of a coalition that held a news conference on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, to brief the media on peace camp positions.
Some speakers at the news conference focused on what they held to be Israel's real motives for the war - election success and also, according to Katz, sanitising corrupt political reputations is also a factor.
Others presented alternative voices from Israel's southern region, which has for years been in the line of fire of rockets from Gaza – and which is considered predominantly in favour of the war ostensibly waged to defend it.

"My son is there [serving in Gaza] and my other sons are scared by the bombs falling over our house," said Dr Yeela Raanan, from Moshav Ein-Habsor, a farm community on the Israeli edge of the Gaza strip.
"As a mother, it's scary ... and I think about the mothers in Gaza and how much more scared they are feeling during this time."
In Sderot, Zion explains that it is precisely because she has been traumatised by rocket attacks that she has less tolerance for her nation's current militaristic mood.
"As a wounded person, I cannot bear this," she said. "I feel there is such a euphoria and glorification of war, as though it's a wedding or a celebration. I can't agree with this attitude. War is a dangerous and traumatic thing and we have to treat it like that."

Media shift
Mass support for war surfaces in the national media at the start of any assault, says Professor Gabriel Weimann, a communications expert at Haifa University who has researched media coverage across several conflict zones.

"During the first week, in every war, the media is very patriotic and rallies round the flag," he said. "Journalists see themselves more as citizens than professionals." But the national media shifts as a war progresses, he adds, and this is already beginning to happen in Israel. "You can see a split and cleavages within the Israel public media," he said.

"At every junction of the operation, there is potential for disagreements. So, now, after the ground attack began, you see articles about how far Israel should go, if it should stay in Gaza, move into the cities, go after Hamas or negotiate with Hamas."

Analysts say that the fate of the Israeli combat soldiers on the ground in Gaza is the factor most likely to turn public opinion about the war.

"The value of a soldier is perceived as greater than the value of a civilian," said Professor Tamara Hermann, the co-author of a monthly poll that monitors Israeli public opinion.

"The media and public discussion on Israeli soldiers relates to them as children, as sons and not as actual soldiers in tanks and so on. There is an understanding that Israeli soldiers are all our children - so that's why they are so dear to us."

12 days since Israel began its bombardment of the Gaza Strip

It has now been 12 days since Israel began its bombardment of the Gaza Strip. On January 3rd, the Israeli Defense Force ground troops began entering Gaza, soon cutting the territory in half. Israel's stated goals are to end rocket attacks originating from Gaza - which had increased sharply following the end of a cease-fire agreement in December.

As Israeli troops began entering Gaza, foreign reporters and photographers were denied entry to the territory by Israel, halting any reports originating from Gaza except those coming from Palestinians. As of today, since the beginning of this campaign, there have reportedly been over 650 deaths in Gaza, and 10 Israelis killed, including 7 soldiers. Israel suspended operations for a few hours today, to allow humanitarian aid to reach the people of Gaza. Officials from France, Egypt and Turkey are working with Israel and the Palestinians to draw up a cease-fire plan, but many details still remain unresolved.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak says he wants an Israeli victory in Gaza

Monday 5th January, 2009

(From R to L) Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Finland's President Tarja Halonen, Egypt's President HosniMubarak, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Syria's President Bashar al-Assad attend the Bastille Day parade in Paris July 14, 2008, in this picture released by the Israeli Government Press Office (GPO).

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stunned visiting foreign ministers Monday when he said he wanted Israel to emerge as the winner in the current conflict in Gaza.

The European foreign ministers, headed by Karel Schwarzenberg of the Czech Republic, whose country currently holds the European Union's rotating presidency, met with Mubarak in Cairo before travelling on to Jerusalem.

The ministers met with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni after arriving in Jerusalem and briefed her on their discussions with the Egyptian president.

It was at that meeting that ministers confided that Mubarak had told them 'Hamas must not be allowed to emerge from the fighting with the upper hand.'

Hamas believes Egypt is trying to broker a ceasefire and sent a delegation to the city on Monday. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert meantime has told visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy that Israel will not honour a ceasefire imposed by the UN Security Council. It will only honour an agreement that it agrees to, the Israeli prime minister told Sarkozy.

Israel wants the rocket attacks to stop, and the smuggling of weapons from Egypt to cease. Mubarak, whose country patrols the border with Egypt, was insisting Monday there was no smuggling, that supplies to Hamas were coming from ships off Gaza.

Israel has said it is a member state of the UN and should not be put on the same basis as Hamas, which it says is a 'terrorist organization.'

Hamas wants a re-opening of all Gaza crossings and a halt to Israeli military raids as pre-conditions of a truce.

The true story behind this war is not the one Israel is telling

Johann Hari - Monday, 29 December 2008

The world isn't just watching the Israeli government commit a crime in Gaza; we are watching it self-harm. This morning, and tomorrow morning, and every morning until this punishment beating ends, the young people of the Gaza Strip are going to be more filled with hate, and more determined to fight back, with stones or suicide vests or rockets. Israeli leaders have convinced themselves that the harder you beat the Palestinians, the softer they will become. But when this is over, the rage against Israelis will have hardened, and the same old compromises will still be waiting by the roadside of history, untended and unmade.

To understand how frightening it is to be a Gazan this morning, you need to have stood in that small slab of concrete by the Mediterranean and smelled the claustrophobia. The Gaza Strip is smaller than the Isle of Wight but it is crammed with 1.5 million people who can never leave. They live out their lives on top of each other, jobless and hungry, in vast, sagging tower blocks. From the top floor, you can often see the borders of their world: the Mediterranean, and Israeli barbed wire. When bombs begin to fall – as they are doing now with more deadly force than at any time since 1967 – there is nowhere to hide.

There will now be a war over the story of this war. The Israeli government says, "We withdrew from Gaza in 2005 and in return we got Hamas and Qassam rockets being rained on our cities. Sixteen civilians have been murdered. How many more are we supposed to sacrifice?" It is a plausible narrative, and there are shards of truth in it, but it is also filled with holes. If we want to understand the reality and really stop the rockets, we need to rewind a few years and view the run-up to this war dispassionately.

The Israeli government did indeed withdraw from the Gaza Strip in 2005 – in order to be able to intensify control of the West Bank. Ariel Sharon's senior adviser, Dov Weisglass, was unequivocal about this, explaining: "The disengagement [from Gaza] is actually formaldehyde. It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so that there will not be a political process with the Palestinians... this whole package that is called the Palestinian state has been removed from our agenda indefinitely."

Ordinary Palestinians were horrified by this, and by the fetid corruption of their own Fatah leaders, so they voted for Hamas. It certainly wouldn't have been my choice – an Islamist party is antithetical to all my convictions - but we have to be honest. It was a free and democratic election, and it was not a rejection of a two-state solution. The most detailed polling of Palestinians, by the University of Maryland, found that 72 per cent want a two-state solution on the 1967 borders, while fewer than 20 per cent want to reclaim the whole of historic Palestine. So, partly in response to this pressure, Hamas offered Israel a long, long ceasefire and a de facto acceptance of two states, if only Israel would return to its legal borders.

Rather than seize this opportunity and test Hamas's sincerity, the Israeli government reacted by punishing the entire civilian population. It announced that it was blockading the Gaza Strip in order to "pressure" its people to reverse the democratic process. The Israelis surrounded the Strip and refused to let anyone or anything out. They let in a small trickle of food, fuel and medicine – but not enough for survival. Weisglass quipped that the Gazans were being "put on a diet". According to Oxfam, only 137 trucks of food were allowed into Gaza last month to feed 1.5 million people. The United Nations says poverty has reached an "unprecedented level." When I was last in besieged Gaza, I saw hospitals turning away the sick because their machinery and medicine was running out. I met hungry children stumbling around the streets, scavenging for food.

It was in this context – under a collective punishment designed to topple a democracy – that some forces within Gaza did something immoral: they fired Qassam rockets indiscriminately at Israeli cities. These rockets have killed 16 Israeli citizens. This is abhorrent: targeting civilians is always murder. But it is hypocritical for the Israeli government to claim now to speak out for the safety of civilians when it has been terrorising civilians as a matter of state policy.

The American and European governments are responding with a lop-sidedness that ignores these realities. They say that Israel cannot be expected to negotiate while under rocket fire, but they demand that the Palestinians do so under siege in Gaza and violent military occupation in the West Bank.

Before it falls down the memory hole, we should remember that last week, Hamas offered a ceasefire in return for basic and achievable compromises. Don't take my word for it. According to the Israeli press, Yuval Diskin, the current head of the Israeli security service Shin Bet, "told the Israeli cabinet [on 23 December] that Hamas is interested in continuing the truce, but wants to improve its terms." Diskin explained that Hamas was requesting two things: an end to the blockade, and an Israeli ceasefire on the West Bank. The cabinet – high with election fever and eager to appear tough – rejected these terms.

The core of the situation has been starkly laid out by Ephraim Halevy, the former head of Mossad. He says that while Hamas militants – like much of the Israeli right-wing – dream of driving their opponents away, "they have recognised this ideological goal is not attainable and will not be in the foreseeable future." Instead, "they are ready and willing to see the establishment of a Palestinian state in the temporary borders of 1967." They are aware that this means they "will have to adopt a path that could lead them far from their original goals" – and towards a long-term peace based on compromise.

The rejectionists on both sides – from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran to Bibi Netanyahu of Israel – would then be marginalised. It is the only path that could yet end in peace but it is the Israeli government that refuses to choose it. Halevy explains: "Israel, for reasons of its own, did not want to turn the ceasefire into the start of a diplomatic process with Hamas."

Why would Israel act this way? The Israeli government wants peace, but only one imposed on its own terms, based on the acceptance of defeat by the Palestinians. It means the Israelis can keep the slabs of the West Bank on "their" side of the wall. It means they keep the largest settlements and control the water supply. And it means a divided Palestine, with responsibility for Gaza hived off to Egypt, and the broken-up West Bank standing alone. Negotiations threaten this vision: they would require Israel to give up more than it wants to. But an imposed peace will be no peace at all: it will not stop the rockets or the rage. For real safety, Israel will have to talk to the people it is blockading and bombing today, and compromise with them.

The sound of Gaza burning should be drowned out by the words of the Israeli writer Larry Derfner. He says: "Israel's war with Gaza has to be the most one-sided on earth... If the point is to end it, or at least begin to end it, the ball is not in Hamas's court – it is in ours."

At Least 280 Palestinians Killed as Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza Continue

Israel's Attack on Gaza -With the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon in the background, an explosion after an Israeli missile strike in the northern Gaza Strip is seen from southern Israel, next to Israel's border with the Gaza Strip (Sebastian Scheiner/AP Photo ) Israeli warplanes have struck Hamas militant targets in the Gaza Strip on the second day of an offensive that has killed at least 280 Palestinians.

Palestinian health workers say Israeli aircraft destroyed Hamas' main security complex in Gaza City Sunday, killing four people. Earlier, Israel's military bombed a Gaza City mosque that it says was a terrorist base, killing two people.

Israel's military deployed ground troops on the edge of Gaza while the Cabinet approved a callup of 6,500 reservists, suggesting plans to expand the offensive.

Gaza militants responded by firing scores of rockets into southern Israel today. Two rockets landed near the Israeli port of Ashdod, reaching deeper into Israel than any rocket previously fired from Gaza. No casualties were reported.

Gaza's streets were deserted and schools were closed. Israel also allowed an aid convoy into Gaza, slightly easing its blockade on the Hamas-run territory.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas criticized Hamas, saying it could have avoided the air strikes if it had extended a six-month truce with Israel. Mr. Abbas was speaking today on a visit to Cairo.

Israeli aircraft dropped at least 16 bombs on five Hamas government buildings in a Gaza City complex, destroying them, setting fires and sending rubble flying for hundreds of yards, witnesses said. Palestinians officials in Gaza say the Israeli air assault that began Saturday has killed at least 280 people, including 180 Hamas security personnel. They say the attacks also have killed at least 15 Palestinian civilians and wounded 700 people.

Israel launched the offensive in response to an upsurge in rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza since Hamas declared an end to a truce with Israel on December 19. A rocket fired from Gaza on Saturday killed one Israeli and wounded several others.

On the first day of the offensive, Israeli aircraft destroyed more than 40 Hamas security installations across Gaza.

Hamas has vowed to avenge the attacks with more rocket strikes and suicide bombings. In Damascus, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal urged Palestinians to wage a new intifada or uprising against Israel.

Today is the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Today is a Sunday. In 1941 it was also a Sunday.

Pearl Harbor
In the early morning hours of December 7, 1941 , the Imperial Japanese navy launched a surprise attack against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii .
At 7:58 A.M., the alarm went out: "Air raid, Pearl Harbor. This is not drill!".

Over 2,400 Americans perished as a result, and over 1,200 were injured. As a result of this act, then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the grim decision to enter the United States in World War II to fight with the Allies against the Axis powers.

Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil

Indian Security Chief resigns over Mumbai attacks

MUMBAI: The fallout from a three-day rampage that killed nearly 200 people in Mumbai threatened to unravel India's improving ties with nuclear rival Pakistan and prompted the resignation on Sunday of the top security minister.

New Delhi said it was raising security to a "war level" and had proof of a Pakistani link to the attacks, which unleashed anger at home over the intelligence failure and delayed response to frenzied violence that paralysed India's financial capital.

Officials in Islamabad have warned that any escalation would force it to divert troops to the Indian border and away from a U.S.-led anti-militant campaign on the Afghan frontier.

Newspaper commentaries blasted politicians for failing to prevent the attacks and for taking advantage of its fallout before elections on Delhi on Saturday and national polls due by May.

Federal Home Minister Shivraj Patil submitted his resignation, India's ruling Congress party coalition said on Sunday. Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram was appointed to take over Patil's job and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will take over the finance portfolio for now, the government said.

Indian TV reported that National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan had also resigned.

Indian officials have said most, if not all, of the 10 Islamist attackers who held Mumbai hostage with frenzied attacks using assault rifles and grenades came from Pakistan. Full Story..Click here

Majoriti nya terpaksa direntap turun. Itu pun masih ada lagi suara "Kami berdiri teguh dibelakang Si Polan", walaupun dah sah Si Polan tu Penyamun Tarbus. Itu lah realiti di Malaysia...........
