Chinese State Media Release Pictures of Somali Pirates Attacking Chinese Ship
China today announced that it is preparing to send its own ships to protect the safe passage of cargo as it passes through the pirate-hit Gulf of Aden.
"China is actively considering sending warships to participate in convoy actions in the Somali sea and Gulf of Aden," China's foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters.
An international anti-piracy force beat off the attempted takeover of a Chinese cargo ship off the Somali coast on Wednesday, sending in attack helicopters which fired on the pirates and forced them to abandon the ship they had boarded. Nine pirates armed with guns overtook the Chinese freighter in speedboats and boarded the vessel, according to a spokesman from the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting centre in Malaysia (ABC)
