Jaya Supermarket collapse, 2 dead 5 remain trapped

THE Jaya supermarket building in Section 14, Petaling Jaya collapsed at 4:45pm, trapping 30 workers inside.

At Press time police have confirmed that seven construction workers are trapped inside. The first fatality was confirmed after the recovery of the body of a construction worker at 6:50pm.

Earlier Fire and Rescue Department personnel pulled out two workers and rushed them to Universiti Hospital. Both are reportedly in stable condition.Other workers were examined on site by several medics.

The rescue operation is still underway, with reports of a possibility that the entire building may soon give way.
Reporters on the field have reported seeing stretchers lined-up on the road next to the collapsed portion of the building, indicating that they expect more casualities -.http://www.mmail.com.my

UPDATE #1 (8:00pm) – Selangor MB Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and MBPJ Mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman on the way to the site.

UPDATE #2 (8:30pm) – Department of Occupational Safety and Health officers are on the scene. Also present are Bukit Gasing State Assemblyman Edward Lee and PJ Mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman. Selangor MB Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim is expected to arrive at 10pm. Rescue workers are still sifting through the rubble to find the remaining seven workers believed to be trapped.

UPDATE #3 (10:00pm) – The two survivors, pulled out of the debris, have been identified as Salle, 48, and Suryano, 32, both Indonesians. The former broke his right calf in his bid to escape while the latter is still unconscious. The deceased meanwhile has only been identified as Maskor, 28, also Indonesian. The survivors are being treated at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, Petaling Jaya.

UPDATE #4 (10:30pm) – Rescue workers have spotted another body trapped beneath the debris. Authorities say there is slim chance that the person might still be alive. They are attempting to make their way through the wreckage to recover the body. However it may be dangerous due to the instability of the building structure.

UPDATE #5 (10:35pm) – Police say rescue work will continue until all victims are found.

UPDATE #6 (11:35pm) – Rescue workers have pulled out a badly crushed body of another worker from the debris. A rescue operations centre, complete with tents, medical and monitoring equipment has been set up.
